Greetings! Welcome to the first Underground Functional Fitness Newsletter
I'm going to share with you the reason why I established Underground Functional Fitness. It may sound interesting at first, but then it may also make you angry like me.
Getting a jaw-dropping body transformation and maintaining a realistic healthy lifestyle is tough - but it's not your fault. I place a lot of blame on the big box/little gyms, supplement companies, bodybuilding industry, and the diet mafia. Many of my clients I consult with don't understand why they can't change their physique. They think its genetics, a bad metabolism, or their age. Let me make something crystal clear, it's not your fault, and I'll explain why in a moment.
I wish it was easy for you to save your time and money and avoid every muscle magazine, diet book, and supplement ad out there and ignore their lies and half truths. You would easily be able to double your progress in half the amount of time.
That's one reason I created Underground Functional Fitness. I got fed up with all the hopeful and frustrated people literally wasting their hard-earned money on bogus short term gimmicks and uneducated and unqualified trainers. I am tired of seeing my own family and friends, some who are even personal trainers themselves, get screwed by the greedy fitness mafia who are selling JUNK that only leaves you further from your goals while they laugh all the way to the bank.
Let me tell you why I'm angry.
1. I'm angry with the WEIGHT LOSS INDUSTRY. They present unrealistic plans that no reasonable person could maintain without causing serious physical damage or gaining all the weight back plus five pounds.
Here is a list of diets that have made MILLIONS of dollars yet only have a minimum continual success rate…
* Low Calorie Diet
* Atkins / Low Carb Diet
* Low Fat Diet
* South Beach Diet
* Detox Diets
* Weight Watchers
* Jenny Craig & NutriSystem
* Acai Berry Diets
Can you say overwhelming and confusing? DIETS DON’T WORK!!!
There is so much misinformation in the weight loss and diet industry it’s sickening.In order to finally lose your belly fat and completely change the course of your health, you must forget all of the worthless information that is in the media today. If any of these diet programs worked so well would our planet be so overweight and unhealthy? Think about this for a moment - as a society we have never eaten like this in history yet we are unhealthier than we have ever been.
Here is the reality – 90% of all the diet books at your book store are the EXACT same.You want to know the secret to writing a bestselling diet book?It’s simple…
Be DIFFERENT!
You need to be only slightly different!
All you need is ONE UNIQUE HOOK and you have an instant bestseller.90% of your content can be the exact same as the last best-seller as long as you have a catchy name with a unique hook that has not been published before.
So if 90% of the diet info is the exact same as the last book – what makes you think that the 10% difference is the magical and miraculous solution this time?Come on, you’re smarter than that.
2. I'm angry with the SUPPLEMENT INDUSTRY:
I recommend you stop wasting hundreds and thousands of dollars on the following so-called muscle building supplements. Almost all bodybuilding supplements DON'T WORK and are a complete joke filled with artificial flavors, fillers, binders, glue, chemicals and poor absorption rates. There is very little if any independent and unbiased research to confirm the validity of the claims most of supplements claim.
3. I am angry at the Bodybuilding Industry:
You’ve read all the major bodybuilding and fitness magazines, books and videos that rehash the same old BS each and every month…
Every bodybuilding magazine is owned and operated by a supplement company, which is why these mags look like massive supplement catalogs.The pages are filled with drug abusing bodybuilders who tell you to train for up to 2-hours a day that only leads to muscular losses.
Follow their advice to gain weight, build muscle, and increase strength, and you're guaranteed only one thing - 6 months from today, you will look just like you do now! And you'll be frustrated, angry, and ticked off. Imitating the training pro bodybuilders works for the genetically gifted and drug user but has no practical relevance for average people like you and me.
People who are without gifted genetic potential, and don't want syringe scars in our butts. Not only is this training advice useless, but it will cause over-training, injuries and illness. Yet, you are conditioned to believe their training style and nutrition programs are exactly what you need. If that is true, then why do bodybuilding trainers go on “pre-contest” diets before photo shoots and stepping on stage. Why are there so many bone and joint injuries amongst bodybuilders and their training clients?
The so-called "experts" will not tell you that drugs and genetics were responsible for curing their problem of being a hardgainer.They claim it's the supplements and "better training."
Give me a break!
Is Everyone Out To Scam You...?
There are a small handful of magazines and supplements that still follow a moral compass and I applaud those individuals who have our best interests in mind.I have nothing against companies profiting and making money as long as there is greater value exchanged to the end-user. In fact, I will support any one trying to do it right. That is why I have researched and created partnerships with such companies.
Ever since my eyes were exposed, I vowed to never hide behind stock photography; a well crafted sales page that over promises and under delivers or a cleverly disguised supplement store. Behind all the deceit, greed and scams in the fitness industry, I swore that I would be in the small handful of honest and passionate fitness trainers who make their living helping people, just like you, transform their lives with a no-nonsense approach.
Anyways, the good news is you're finally here and you can avoid the problems above by sticking with us. You know that Underground Functional Fitness is the one website that will tell it to you straight.
I'm Not Trying to Twist Your Arm...
I'll admit - my No Frills system is definitely not for everyone.It's not for wimps, know-it-all's, over-analyzers, complainers or tire-kickers. It requires a level of commitment and seriousness that most just can't cut.The truth is that my stuff will work extremely effective if you fall into the following categories;
1. You're angry. Not just at the fitness industry, but angry and frustrated about your current level of progress.
2. You're sick and tired of spinning your wheels and looking the way you do in the mirror.
3. You're fed up with this ridiculous plateau you've hit and you know you deserve more for how hard you work.
If This Sounds Like You...
Then I would like to offer you an opportunity to tryout to become a part of Underground Functional Fitness. BEWARE my No Frills System requires two things:
1. A cutting edge diet and training program, based on scientifically methods, and...
2. Your commitment.
Member of the Month
Congratulations to our own Disney Princess!
Before Training After Training (9 months later)
It was a magical event for one of Underground Functional Fitness’s dedicated members. Not even a year into training with Coach Brown, Jeanne Schauland crossed the finish line at her first ever half marathon in Orlando.“The marathon I chose was the Disney Princess half marathon.If a person is crazy enough to run that far, Disney is the place to do it,” says Schauland. More than 7,000 women of all ages participated in the event inspired by Disney Princesses and their attributes of commitment, courage, determination, fantasy, perseverance, and strength – all qualities Schauland possesses.
Schauland started working out with Coach Brown back in June and quickly started seeing results. She has lost 32 pounds so far and is having to buy new clothes.Her energy level has increased, her sleep and moods have improved, she is stronger, has better stamina, and more confidence.Her perseverance really shined through when she decided losing weight wasn’t enough. “I didn't want my goal to be a specific weight or clothing size.I wanted it to be a performance goal, hence the marathon decision,” says Schauland.
“Running was nerve-wracking, exciting, exhausting and exhilarating all at the same time. Dave had worked out a training schedule for me so by the time D-Day arrived, I felt very confident that I could accomplish what I set out to do.He was very encouraging, supportive, realistic and TOUGH on me.Exactly what I needed, whether I realized it or not! Crossing the finish line was a feeling I have trouble explaining.The sense of accomplishment was phenomenal.I always joked that my idea of exercise was watching the Biggest Loser on television and here I was running 13 miles.To actually complete my goal was such a sense of accomplishment and to have my family there at the finish line was very emotional for me.I shed a few tears...I was excited, proud and relieved,” says Schauland.
Schauland’s new goals are to start more body sculpting and get more tone.She has a super cute pair of shorts she would like to wear this summer and is going to work her tail off to get in them.She has been a nurse for 30 years and recently started a new job at the Orthopedic and Sports Surgery center in Appleton.She is a grandmother of two beautiful boys, loves to read, and is the director of women's ministry at her church.And like many at Underground Functional Fitness, she has made working out a lifestyle, “I do look forward to working out now and notice on days I don't work out that I feel a little ‘off’.It has become a lifestyle change for me and I can’t imagine exercise not being part of my daily routine. I owe a lot of that attitude to Dave who has been very positive and supportive of me.A true blessing in my life.”

Yoga Comes to Underground Functional Fitness

Underground Functional Fitness is adding Yoga to the schedule! Classes start April 21st and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30pm. We are very pleased to welcome instructor Greg Balza to the lineup. Greg was referred to us by one of our clients who has seen amazing results from the combination of fitness and yoga training.
Greg believes results come through hard work and consistent practice. Fueling the hard work is proper nutrition and mental attitude. Yoga is mind medicine and is 1% theory and 99% practice. He is a motivator and hopes to inspire students to cultivate a regular yoga practice and connect with their already existing inner potential by using yogic technologies latent in all human beings. He is excited and humbled by the prospect of sharing these technologies with those at Underground Functional Fitness.
Greg was born and raised in the Fox Cities, and since 1988 has been traveling the world, looking for something that has always been present in his heart-- peace. Along the way he stumbled upon an adage that has helped shape his life- “no yoga, no peace-know yoga, know peace”. Through the practice of yoga, Greg found peace and contentment in his inner being and is inspired to share what he has learned to help others on their quest. He is trained in both Ashtanga, otherwise known as Power Yoga and Kundalini Yoga.
Greg holds a M.A. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) and a BA in Social and Behavioral Sciences from California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), and has coached and taught physical fitness courses while serving in the US Army and elsewhere.

CHRONIC BACK PAIN MANAGEMENT

Article provided by: Rodney K. Lefler, DC, CSCS Chiropractor, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist Neuroscience Group of Wisconsin
There are three general categories identified as risks in developing back pain: Biomechanical – repetitive bending and twisting or cumulative loads imposed on the spine in the workplace, psychosocial- job dissatisfaction and depression, and personal – age, weight, congenital spinal abnormalities, back endurance or history of low back pain. In the general working population as well as for collegiate athletes the single best predictor of future back pain is a history of previous low back pain. Impaired motor control of the lumbar spine has been proposed as one of the possible mechanisms which would predispose an individual to suffer a low back injury. Individuals with low back pain exhibit delayed muscle response compared to healthy controls when confronted with sudden loading. Spinal stability depends on appropriate muscle control to withstand sudden loading and an individual may be more likely to sustain an injury if his or her muscle response is inadequate.
It has been shown that early intervention for the management of acute low back pain leads to improved outcomes in disability, general health, social function, anxiety, depressive symptoms, mental health, and vitality. However, up to one third of patients report persistent back pain of at least moderate intensity 1 year after an acute episode and 1 in 5 report substantial limitations in activity. There is strong evidence that supports the use of Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation to reduce symptoms and improve function in patients with acute, sub acute and chronic back pain. There is good evidence that the use of exercise in conjunction with Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation is likely to speed outcomes as well as minimize episodic recurrences. For subacute and chronic back pain The American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society recommend intensive interdisciplinary rehabilitation, exercise therapy, acupuncture, massage, spinal manipulation, yoga, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or progressive relaxation. Exercise programs that incorporate individual tailoring, supervision, stretching, and strengthening are associated with the best outcomes.
The Neuroscience Group of Northeast Wisconsin incorporates the providers and programs for intensive interdisciplinary rehabilitation: neurosurgery, neurology, physical medicine physicians, chiropractic, physical and occupational therapy, x-ray and digital MRI. We provide the initial conservative treatment modalities as well as more invasive treatments: epidurals, facet and sacroiliac injections, pain pumps, field stimulators, and surgeries. Many patients improve with this traditional rehabilitation strategy, however many need an additional step. That next step is performance training.
Performance training demands that risk be taken. The patient’s physical capacity is overloaded to the edge of failure. In the rehabilitation setting our goal is pain reduction, establishing motor control actions without pain and building function for improved activities of daily living. Once patients achieve set goals in their rehab program they are discharged often with mixed results. Some achieve zero pain and 100% improvement in function. Many “just learn to live with it” and await the next acute episode. What’s missing in this population is the performance training model. Underground Functional Fitness, in Menasha Wisconsin, incorporates a training philosophy of patient specific customized training programs. They are highly trained professionals that are not afraid to take you to the next level. They communicate with the client’s health care provider and tailor a comprehensive program to address chronic functional impairments that often lead to future pain episodes. Their classes and individual programs aid in the prevention of back pain and other musculoskeletal injuries.
Chronic back pain management requires a multidisciplinary team approach. The Neuroscience Group of Northeast Wisconsin and Underground Functional Fitness work together to provide patients the modalities needed to combat pain. Together we have the tools to provide patients and clients outcomes that other traditional therapeutic approaches could not achieve.
Inspiration from a Client
My clients say I inspire and motivate them, but what people don’t know is that my clients inspire me as well. I leave you with some extraordinary words from a client who is a strong and dedicated woman. Underground Functional Fitness is happy she is part of our team. I hope you enjoyed our first newsletter, remember if you keep doing what you’re doing, than you’ll keep getting what you’re getting. – Coach Brown

Do Not Lose Heart - Nothing is Wasted with God
With muscles aching and breathing labored, I began to unpack the streamers and balloons. I was getting ready for my pity party. It started during my workout. I was with a group of people, participating in a "boot camp" style of working out. I was rotating through different exercises, led by a "platoon leader" and just about killing myself with exhaustion. I appreciate the results of working out, but I hate the process.
"Why does everything have to be so hard for me?" I grumbled to myself. Everything about getting through this trial is hard. Working out is hard. Getting up is hard. Sleeping through the night is hard. Staying organized is hard. My list went on and on. The only thing I could really say wasn't hard was eating, and that was only because I had Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies in the house, but even so, resisting to eat the whole box, was hard. And so the party began, and I was well on my way with noise makers and party games before long.
Then in the nick of time, thankfully, the truth of God was hand delivered to me by two people; nothing is wasted in God's economy. And the still small voice of God gently nudged my stubborn heart and said, "Therefore do not lose heart."
Now where was that verse? I picked up my bible and searched it out. 2 Corinthians 4:16 - 18 says "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."
I felt as if I was losing heart. I wanted to give up. Throw in the towel. Jump ship. (Although I wasn't sure where I would jump to.) The truth is, we all are getting older day by day but more so, I also was feeling the outward physical effects of wasting away as I was enduring a trial for a long period of time. I was tired, weary, even aching. Much like I feel during my workout.
The verses encourage us, though, that, in the power of the Holy Spirit, our inner being is being renewed day by day. When I workout, I do not see the benefit of what is happening each time I lift a weight or run or row. The great amount of physical exertion and strenuous activity do not produce strong muscles overnight. Much in the same way, the suffering in our lives although it may be taking its toll on our bodies, is producing a strength in our inner being. And God as the great "platoon leader" is standing there assisting us through the whole process.
There is so much in these three verses that I see, as I study them tonite, and it would take me a long time to write them all, so I encourage you, dear reader, to seek God in what He may have for you here. We need to keep our eyes fixed not on our circumstances, but looking up and away, we can fix our eyes on the eternal glories that our trials are achieving for us, producing for us, working out for us. Nothing is wasted in God's economy; He is using it all.
This is not all for our good, however. It is also for the good of God's people and for His glory. As we endure the workout of our sufferings, we gain a greater capacity to praise, serve and glorify God, not only in the now, but in the future, when we will stand before Him and struggle no more.
Just for the record, the party is pretty much torn down now. The Lord helped me get rid of the pathetic pity party. The only party I'm now working on preparing for is the one that I look forward to celebrating in heaven. |
