Greetings!

Welcome to the Underground Functional Fitness Newsletter

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence therefore is not an act but a habit. ~Aristotle

I borrowed this one from our old friend Aristotle – it sums up exactly what needs to be said.

If you have a really good training session where you push your limits and do everything as planned, this does not make you an excellent trainee.

If you stick to your nutrition plan for one week, this does not make you an excellent trainee.

We can all be brilliant once in a while, but true excellence comes with practice, practice, and more practice. Only once a solid nutritional plan and training regime becomes a subconscious part of your life which you cannot do without, can you consider yourself an excellent trainee.

Once you’re an excellent trainee you have the right to demand excellent results – and you won’t be disappointed.

Results come with progression over a long period of time. You already know this but it’s so important we’re telling you again! Let’s see you creating life-changing habits not making token gestures and then slipping back to your old ways - this makes you weak not excellent!

MAKE A COMMITMENT...HONOR THAT COMMITMENT... LIVE FREE!!!

At Underground Functional Fitness we call them "hobby trainers".  You will find them at big box gyms telling people to pump iron and getting them nowhere.  Ask Stephanie Kleman and she will tell you first hand that her previous "hobby trainers" had "no concept of nutrition or keeping [her] on a lifesyle".  They say three's a charm and that must be the case for Stephanie.  After two failed attempts with personal trainers, she tried one last time in September 2008 and found Underground Functional Fitness's own Aaron Chaltry.  "Aaron listened to my complaints, worked with me to figure out what changes I wanted to make and helped me accomplish those goals.  I was extremely happy with the results and the level of work Aaron had me doing, I became addicted to his methods" says Stephanie.

Stephanie's hard work and perseverance helped her lose 30 pounds and drop four dress sizes before her wedding in May.  She not only has taken on a whole new look, but also a whole new lifestyle.  She took up running, something she says no one would have ever caught her doing in high school or college.  Two weeks after her wedding she ran the Bellin Run and another 10K in July.  This month she plans on running a 4-mile race and will be doing the Fox Cities 1/2 marathon in September.  "It's exciting to meet my own goals, but what makes meeting my goals even better is to have someone there who believes that you can attain those goals from the beginning and gets just as excited as you when they are achieved," says Stephanie.  "I feel incredible after each workout and continue to be impressed with their professionalism and excitement for each individual client.

Stephanie says that besides marrying her husband, working out at Underground Functional Fitness has been the best decision she has made.  "I am definitely a healthier and happier person.  I enjoy telling people how I got here.  It's crazy how trying on clothes now is fun because the sizes keep getting smaller instead of bigger.  I love the challenge and the confidence I have gained while going through this process at Underground!"

Stephanie is employed at Associated Bank in Green Bay.  She and her husband enjoy biking and golfing and spending as much time as possible outdoors.

New Hires at Underground Functional Fitness!

Ashley Calhoun

Walk into Underground Functional Fitness and you will not only be met with an impressive facility, but also with a big bright smile from Ashley Calhoun.  Ashley joins the team as the Business Operations Associate.  While her responsibilities include necessary jobs to make the business run, Ashley is a great go-to person for any current or potential clients wanting to learn more about Underground Functional Fitness.  When she’s not behind the desk or with clients, you will find her sweating her butt off in Boot Camp.  Ashley started Boot Camps two months ago with her mom and became hooked.

She left her job as a Manager for a cosmetic line at Macy’s in order to work full-time at Underground.  “I love the atmosphere here at Underground.  Before when I was helping people in cosmetics, it was all on the surface.  Now I’m helping people change," says Ashely.  She played collegiate volleyball and loves the intensity of the workouts at Underground Functional Fitness.

Becca Kandler

Becca Kandler worked along side Coach Brown at a former gym in Menasha as a group fitness instructor. Becca was so impressed with Coach Brown’s technique and with the results people were getting that she decided to not only work beside him but to work with him.  “I had two knee surgeries, he made modifications to my training and he had a plan to strengthen and help with my rehabilitation.”  Becca said she wanted to feel good, and that’s exactly what happened.  Even though losing weight wasn’t her goal, she lost 15 pounds and her training with Coach Brown significantly improved her strength and mobility.

Becca says her experience has made her want to help others with similar problems.  “I look forward to seeing people’s lives change, not necessarily their bodies but their attitudes. I want others to realize how much you can do in your daily life.”  Becca has experience teaching water aerobics, group fitness classes, and circuit training.  She joins Underground Functional Fitness as a part-time Assistant Coach and will be teaching Boot Camps.  She is a full-time editor at JJ Keller & Associates.

Brent Miller

Underground Functional Fitness is pleased to welcome Fitness Coach Brent Miller to the team.  Brent is a Menasha native who graduated with a degree in Fitness Studies at Lakeland College. Brent had his eye on Underground Functional Fitness since meeting Coach Brown last summer.  Coach Brown gave a talk at a summer school program at Menasha High School where Brent was working.  He says he was immediately intrigued by Coach Brown’s philosophies and styles of teaching. “After hearing him talk, I knew I wanted to work for him,” says Brent.

Fitness and athletics play a big role in Brent’s life.  He played football in high school and college.  His favorite thing about working in the fitness industry is that there is never a routine.  He believes in Underground Functional Fitness’s philosophy in that no workout is and ever should be the same.  “I love working with people and helping them reach their goals and make lifestyle changes,” says Brent. “I am anxious to share my knowledge with clients and to grow even more as a trainer at Underground.”

Brent’s parents also live in Menasha and he has an older brother, Zack and younger sister Lea.

Julie Newbert

Working at Underground Functional Fitness should come easy for Julie Newbert.  That’s because she’s already put a lot of work into her personal training and has the results to prove it.  After topping the scales at 300 punds, Julie decided to do something about it.  Her mom and sister bought her a gift certificate and she was fortunate enough to find Aaron.  After diligently training with Aaron and following the Underground System, she is now down to her high school weight of 190 pounds.  She has a passion for fitness and feels she has a story to share.

“I never thought I’d ever be at this fitness level and I want people to know that it’s possible,” says Julie.  “I want to inspire people. I feel I am able to relate to them.”  Julie talked to Coach Brown about her desire to help people reach their goals and decided to get her NSCA certification and become an Assistant Coach at Underground.  Fitness has always been a part of her life, as she played volleyball, basketball, and track in high school.  She’s accomplished more than she dreamed of and enjoys being a part of the Underground team.  “The system works, I believe in it.”

Julie and her husband live in Menasha and own Spats restaurant.  They have two children, Hannah (2), and Devin (4).

Inspiration from a Client

Be Strong in the Lord

I surprised myself the other day. I went to boot camp, begrudgingly. It was testing day, and I do not enjoy testing day. It’s enough for me to get to the gym, let alone have to be tested, but I knew it was important and so I persevered.

Each test day there are three different categories to perform – sit-ups, push-ups and 2000 meters on the rowing machine. Obviously, the goal (or the hope) is to improve each time.  I was a bit crabby that day, and mumbled something under my breath like, "I suppose I'll do worse this time." I got down in to the modified push-up position. The test was to do as many push-ups as one can until "fail," in other words, until your muscles are shivering and shaking, and you cannot push your body up off of the ground one more time.

So, I went at it.  Before long I was at thirty and then forty, followed by fifty, fifty-five, and fifty-seven.  Determined to hit a round number, I made it to sixty -- and that was it. Not only could I not get up, I couldn't even roll over. However, I was shocked. I did 30 more than I did one month ago!

I truly couldn't believe that I had made that much progress. Was I really getting stronger? Was all that work I was doing really more than misery and pain? I went faithfully to the boot camp three times a week for the past month, but each time I felt worn out. I was working on modifying my diet, as well, but I just couldn't believe that I had actually progressed to that level.

I am reminded that gaining strength in the Lord is quite similar. There are times when we are going through some serious "resistance training." Not only are we working against intense pain, sadness or suffering, but we feel like we want to resist having to do it. In the process though, we learn that staying committed to the Lord is the key to our growing stronger in Him. We develop perseverance over time (unfortunately, it's the only way that perseverance can be developed) and this adds to our strength. We learn more about what to take in to our minds (the truth) and what to fight to leave out (the lies). We develop a focused faith that takes one day at a time.

1 Peter 5:10 says, "And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast."

Strong, firm and steadfast. That is what I was feeling, physically after realizing that I had become stronger by being committed to coming to the boot camps, eating well and working hard. I didn't give up, even though I wanted to at times. Spiritually, it may be a bit different, but God gives us opportunities to grow stronger in Him as we stay committed to Him, watch what we take in to our minds and hearts and pursue a life of obedience to Him. Don't give up. It's not always easy to do the right thing, but blessings do come along the path.

Be strong in the Lord, dear reader. God uses our circumstances to strengthen us for the calling that He has for our lives. Trust in Him. Obey Him. Seek Him. You will grow stronger and stronger, and you may even surprise yourself one day.
