One Reason Why Underground Functional Fitness is "Functional"
The training you get at Underground Functional Fitness has a purpose and it works. That’s why it’s called “functional”. But to get those results, it’s not just the training that has to be functional – the business has to function as well. This wouldn’t be possible without the work of one person. The experience and knowledge of Dave and his trainers is what draws people to Underground Functional Fitness, but it’s the work of Sarah Brown that helps the business succeed.
As Dave’s wife and biggest supporter, Sarah plays a vital role in the business’s existence. She is in charge of business operations, taking care of all financial matters, taxes, and employee reporting. She is more than qualified holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Marketing and is almost finished with her Masters in Business with a concentration in Financial Planning. Sarah is a full-time Independent Financial Advisor for Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. She provides managed money and retirement planning services.
While she may not be there on a daily basis, she definitely leaves her mark with her exquisite taste and style throughout the facility. The overall décor and design of the front entrance was inspired by her desire for a contemporary yet classy look. Decorating is one thing, keeping it looking nice is another. Sarah ensures everything looks top notch by coming in once a week and doing a thorough cleaning. She even takes the work home and washes and folds all the towels. “I want to see David succeed in his new role and I think that by helping him out in other areas this would help ensure his success as a trainer and a coach,” says Sarah.
If you ask Sarah how she does it all, she will reply by saying “I just get er done!” She doesn’t follow a particular schedule except leaving Sundays completely work free. “I just know what needs to be done and I get it done, one way or another,” says Sarah. “I have been encouraging David to do his own thing since we met in summer 2005. To see the facility finally materialize is a dream come true for David. To see him finally doing what he loves full time and with such passion is great”.
Sarah played a crucial role in getting it started by being one of the first to push Dave to follow his dream. When the two met, Dave was working full time in Law Enforcement, part-time as a college instructor, and training clients. “Despite being great at all three, training was clearly what he was most passionate about,” says Sarah. “He was in demand yet couldn’t take any more clients on due to his law enforcement career. I think David was afraid to leave the comfort and stability of being employed by a state government.” With Sarah’s encouragement, Dave finally agreed the stability and income was not worth sacrificing what he loved doing.
The decision to open Underground Functional Fitness is proving to be a wise one. Both Dave and Sarah say it has evolved into more than they imagined. One of Sarah’s favorite things is the camaraderie among the staff and clients. “The clients at Underground are probably the best a company could ask for. The clients all seem to have a common bond that you don’t see at other fitness facilities, most everyone seems to know each other by name. The clients of Underground are not just clients but have become friends.”
Sarah credits her active life as a farm girl in Fremont, Wisconsin for steering her towards working out and working hard. Sarah knows first-hand about the difficulty and hard work the clients put into their training. As a National-Ranked bodybuilder, she has a true appreciation for the hard work each and every client puts forth. “When I see the clients make gains, I know they have busted their butt both in and outside the facility.”
Sarah says the long term goal is for Underground Functional Fitness to be the dominant provider of all nutrition consulting and personal and athletic training in the entire Fox Cities and state of Wisconsin - leaving traditional gyms unnecessary for anyone serious about being fit and healthy. When Sarah isn’t hard at work she enjoys spending time with friends and family. She and Dave have four kids. Caleb is 14, Peyton is 8, and DeShaun and Parys are both 7.
